Dunking
I have a confession to make: I am 6'6.5" tall and am unable to dunk a basketball. It's embarrassing, to be honest with you. I'm out playing basketball (which I've been doing a bunch of since I moved back to Texas! Suprisingly, San Antonio is a real basketball town.) and some short dude (under 6' tall) says "Dunk it!" All I can do is hang my head sheepishly and say, "Truthfully, I can't dunk." It makes one feel crappy. Here I am blessed with all of this height and I can't do anything with it on the basketball court other than hold the ball up high above my head so shrimps can't reach it.
To be fair, I did dunk once in college. That was at the height of my physical fitness during my freshman year. I was my current height give or take a half-inch at the time and about 30 pounds lighter. Yes, I am fatter now than back then, but I'm also "thicker" due to increased muscle mass and generally getting older. But, this dunk was not a monster slam with two hands and I was all by myself in the gym. So, I don't count that particular dunk as much.
So, my life is clearly incomplete. What do to? Well, I'm putting myself on a "vertical leap increase" program. No, I'm not purchasing Jumpsoles. Instead, I'm going to focus on increasing activities that will help. Most notably:
- Weight Lifting of legs (which I haven't done in 5+ years)
- Jump drills around the basketball court
- "Dunk Practice" where I just hit the court and try to dunk. My technique sucks.
- Jumping rope for fitness.
So, when I have photos, I'll post them here. All I want to do before I die is dunk on someone in a real, live basketball game. I don't think it's too much to ask!
